A biographic story about coincidence and (bad) luck.
In 2001, Maarten van der Weijden was diagnosed with leukemia and doctors gave him a surviving chance between 30 and 50 percent. On august 21st of 2008, Maarten won the Olympic Gold at the 10km Open Water Swimming in Beijing. In ‘Beter’ Maarten tells about the period when he was ill and gives his vision on recovering from cancer. He’s very honest about the difficulties he experienced in the relationship with his father and about his tactics to become the first person who wins the gold at the new Olympic swimming distance. Maarten beautifully describes the first meters he swam after getting out of the hospital and his way to the golden success in Beijing. ‘Beter’ is a touching book about coincidence and (bad) luck in life.
